To love a dog

Posted by Natasha on May 29, 2008

May 28, 2008 has been the worst day of the days I have spent in Kansas.  The reason for that being the worst day is that my dog Delicious was killed by a car.  My family and I do not know who ran over her. But I can tell you that I have not felt hurt like that since I was a little girl.  The hardest part of dealing with the death of Delicious is that my family and I had raised her and weaned her.  We watched her mom carry her.  We were able to move her and her litter mates inside our house shortly after her mom had given birth. Delicious was born in December and her mom had given birth to her in a thicket near the house. Even though it was December, the cold had not set in.  Nevertheless, it was dangerous for Delicious to be there.

Delicious was one of two female puppies.  I believe she was the second born from that litter because she was so strong.  The big boy was named Tank. Tank and Delicious would battle over food and even for our affection.  When we packed up to leave Arkansas, we brought Delicious with us because of her strong will and energy. One of the things I have learned from her life is to live.

Here are some lessons I learned from Delicious:

  • Find moments of freedom and celebrate it to the fullest!
  • Take the time to chill and just enjoy the moment.
  • Look at everything with wonder and excitement.
  • Protect and love the ones you love by any means necessary.

I never thought that I would be impacted by her death the way that I have. She was a part of my family and she will always hold a special place in our hearts. We celebrate the life that Delicious lived by living out the lessons that she taught.
